V 2 (Major-General Walter Dornberger. Translated from the German by James Cleugh and Geoffrey Halliday)

>> Deutscher Titel: V2 - Der Schuss ins Weltall

Major General Dornberger was head of the German Army's rocket missile development programmes, responsible for creating the first intercontinental missile, the V 2, which was used against Britain and parts of Europe in the latter part of WWII. Here Dornberger traces the development, testing and use of this weapon and others that were under design or test toward the end of the war in Europe. An interesting account of this aspect of Germany's war effort, and the science that went into it.

Man into Space. New Projects for Rockets and Space Travel (Hermann Oberth. Translated by G. P. H. De Freville)

>> Deutscher Titel: Menschen im Weltraum. Neue Projekte für Raketen- und Raumfahrt

Widely recognized as one of the earliest and most distinguished pioneers of rocket research, Hermann Oberth has been studying space travel since the early 1920's. The principles he has formulated and his contributions to the development of the V-2 and other rockets have assured Professor Oberth's place as one of the great rocket scientists.

Man into space presents his theories about the earth satellite, space stations, space suits and the equipment to be used by explorers. Professor Oberth describes spaceships to be powered by electricity derived from the Sun, observatories to be installed on asteroids, vehicles for use in exploring the Moon, and special problems of space travel. He discusses the planet most suitable for Man's first visit, and explains the physical and mental tests which would-be space travelers should undergo before attempting journeys away from Earth. One of the Most arrestings of the Oberth proposals is the space mirror, which could be used to concentrate the Sun's rays and bring about many changes on Earth.

Professor Oberth believes that many of this predictions will be realized by the year 2000. This stimulating book is illustrated with more than seventy line drawings and halftones. An appendix offers the mathematical justification of Professor Oberth's theories.

First on the Moon. A Voyage with Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. (Gene Farmer, Dora Jane Hamblin, Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, Edwin E. Aldrin Jr.)

>> Deutscher Titel: Wir waren die Ersten

The time, money, lives, will, knowledge - the total effort that went into putting man on the moon is beyond measurement. First on the Moon: A Voyage with Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. is the exclusive story of Apollo 11 and the always thrilling and historic personal experiences of the three astronauts who put man on the moon. It is a voyage in every sense of the word - through time, from President Kennedys fateful pronouncement on May 25, 1961, that the United States would put man on the moon before the decade was out, and throuhg space, with Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo.

Incredible stories such as this one are rarely described in any way befitting the adventure itself, but with the help of Gene Farmer and Dora Jane Hamblin, First on the Moon has been written with a depth and impact equal in every way to the adventure itself. The flight of Apollo 11 is of course the essence of First on the Moon and, although it is thoroughly documented, it is written in what Mike Collins calls "agricultural terms". It is always a personal account - the astronauts as representatives of all mankind, but as individuals with their own responses to each step in the adveture. From the dramatic liftoff and earth orbit through the operation known as translunar injection, then transposition and docking - each mechanized and technical operation becomes a human exploit rivaling the most thrilling moments in the tales told by H. G. Wells and Jules Verne.

Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin were chosen to go on the most thrilling of all voyages, but the enterprise was not theirs and theirs alone. Many thousends of scientists, engineering and industrial people were behind them, including eight astronauts who did not live to see the day.

Hermann Oberth. The Father of Space Flight (Boris V. Rauschenbach)

"What is the purpose of space travel? To make available for life every place where life is possible. To make inhabitable all worlds as yet uninhabitable, and all life purposeful." (Hermann Oberth)

"The dramatic moment at which a human being first set foot on another heavenly body was a new high point in human history, a high point for which Hermann Oberth laid the foundation and created the prerequisites." (Wernher von Braun)

"Hermann Oberth has breathed life into the age of space, nurtured it, and watched it grow." (Neil Amstrong)

"The moment a human being had the idea and ability to create a "work of art," the first landing on the moon and flight into space in reality began at that time." (Arno Breker)

"Mankind's first tentative steps toward its neighbors in space may be compared with the bold steps those aquatic animals undertook 200 million years ago when for the first time they left their familiar watery abode an ventured out into the thoroughly hostile environement of dry land." (Ernst Stuhlinger)

"The successful and timely completion of the lunar landing is the most impressive accomplishment of the German-American team of rocket engineers and space scientists and will be noted in the annals of human history for all time to come." (Konrad K. Dannenberg)

"The next scientific step that would be comparable to Hermann Oberth's contribution to the evolution of mankind would be to exceed the speed of light in space travel." (Joe F. Bodenstein)
